Sobre la Transoxiana Histórica

El nombre "Transoxiana" fue elegido en homenaje a la región centroasiática asi llamada por los griegos, a través de la cual pasaban las rutas que llevaban especias e ideas, de un punto a otro del mundo, del Japon a Venecia, la que recorrieron monjes y viajeros, la Ruta de la Seda.

Probable hogar de Zoroastro, Transoxiana fue el término usado por los griegos para denominar a la región situada más allá del río Oxus (hoy Amu Darya). Llamada Sogdiana por los Aquemenidas y unificada con Bactria por Alejandro Magno en una sola satrapía. Independizada, conformó el Reino Greco-Bactrio de Diodoto, posteriormente invadido por la dinastía Kushana, luego ocupada por los árabes en el siglo VIII. Allí se desarrolló una buena parte de la ciencia que los árabes legaron a Europa en los siglos posteriores. En el siglo XIII fue ocupada por los mongoles y en el siglo XIV Tamerlan instaló alli, en Samarcanda, su capital, y atrajo a ella a gentes de todas las artes, profesiones y comercios: griegos, chinos, egipcios, persas, armenios, sirios, etc. La región fue sucesivamente gobernada por diversas ciudades-estado islámicas independientes, hasta el siglo XIX, cuando fue invadida por los rusos. Hoy es parte de la República de Uzbekistan, independiente desde 1991. Bukhara, Samarkanda y Khiva son, probablemente, los exponentes mas prestigiosos de la milenaria historia de la Transoxiana.
